About SumiFox
SumiFox brings together Japanese work around ink, character, and paper. We begin with Shodo — Japanese calligraphy — and will carefully expand to hanko, paper objects, and other handmade works from Japan.
Curated by Atsuko
SumiFox is curated by Atsuko. Born and raised in Kyoto, she studied art history in Osaka and has lived in Berlin for about 25 years. Her perspective connects lived Japanese culture with an understanding of how these works can be shown in Europe — respectfully and accessibly.
Direct relationships, fair prices
SumiFox buys directly from artists and workshops in Japan, pays fair prices, and treats artist, object, motif, and customer with equal respect. We want to show less, but with greater care.
How we choose works
Quality, origin, material, and meaning are central. We avoid clichés, artificial mystique, and print-speak. Every work should be explained — accessibly for people just discovering Shodo, and with depth for those who have long appreciated it.
