Takemura Chikako

竹村 千佳子 · Tottori Prefecture, Japan

竹村千佳子 / Takemura Chikako was born in 1949 in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Her works represent an expressive direction of Japanese calligraphy: strong black ink traces, rhythmic movement, open paper space and the tension between written sign and abstract image. Her work has been documented in the context of the 墨人会 (Bokujin-kai) since 1975. In 1987 she became a member of the 墨人会, later left, and is currently listed as a 準会員 (associate member). Documented stations include a solo exhibition at Arima Society in 2007 and a two-person exhibition with 史穂呼 at Hōnen-in / 法然院 in 2019. For SumiFox, Takemura Chikako represents a powerful, physical and open side of calligraphy: ink becomes not only writing, but trace, movement and space.

Philosophy

For Takemura Chikako, calligraphy is a physical practice: ink becomes trace, movement and space. The sign remains legible without being reduced to pure writing — it stands between word, gesture and image.

Working method

Sumi ink on paper. Expressive brush and ink traces, open paper space, rhythm of movement, density and emptiness. Calligraphic signs between writing and abstract image.

Curatorial note

Takemura Chikako's works show how Shodo can move beyond readable writing. Her pieces feel physical, immediate and image-like. For SumiFox, she expands the platform with a more expressive and abstract position.

Process

  1. 01Engagement with the character — meaning, sound, visual presence.
  2. 02The composition is thought through mentally, not pre-drawn.
  3. 03One movement — the gesture is committed to the paper with the body; density and emptiness emerge in the same breath.
  4. 04Selection, drying, signature and seal.
